 5Rhythms®:

Created by Gabrielle Roth and practiced by tens of thousands worldwide, 5Rhythms® is a dynamic movement practice rooted in the principle that if you put the psyche in motion it will heal itself. Movement is both the medicine and the metaphor, reaching across all languages, cultures and age groups to transform suffering into art, art into awareness, and awareness into action. Wherever the 5Rhythms® are practiced, a community is born to dance, to sweat, to change, to support, and to provide a safe space for each of us to shatter the ego's hold and awaken the creative part of ourselves that yearns to be free.

5Rhythms SWEAT:

Ballet Barre - Adult Beginning

Teacher(s): Romy Keegan ~ See Schedule for times and prices

For more information on Classes: Email Instructor   505-366-4982

On-going, basic, beginning ballet barre exercises, principles, and technique that develop strength, balance, concentration, coordination, confidence and grace, taught in a supportive, playful, noncompetitive environment.  As this is an on-going, drop-in adult class, the focus is on working mindfully and deeply on the subtle and powerful mechanics involved just in the barre work - properly strengthening and stretching new or returning dancers, so that if further ballet training is desired, students leave this class with excellent beginning technique which will allow for strong, pain free ballet in the future!  Please contact Bianca at Bianca Lily Ballet for information on additional beginning and intermediate level classes! abqbianca@gmail.com

ATTIRE: Some of the dancers in class wear the traditional leotard and tights, perhaps with a ballet skirt, but they are not required.  Wear close fitting clothing, that will allow me to see your form, for proper alignment and good mechanics.  Leggings, or sweats or shorts if you are male, with a snug t-shirt are fine.  In the wintertime wear layers, as the studio can be chilly at the beginning of class.

SHOES: Socks or barefeet are fine for your first couple of classes, however, if you decide you'd like to continue, ballet shoes are reommended.  The longer you explore ballet, the more you will need them.  Dance Tyme & NM Dancewear are both excellent local dancewear shops.

This class is perfect for developing the classical aspects of Ballet-Afrique, the exuberently graceful contemporary fusion classes that are also offered!

Tuesdays, 4pm - 5:15, BACK DOOR STUDIO, $12/class or $44 for 4 classes.

DROP-IN!  No registration required, join any time!

Playful, beginner friendly, community oriented dance classes, intended to intellegently build your strength and stamina, while inspiring you to move and express your Self with grace and joy!  Each class is carefully designed to provide layers of movement and instruction, suitable to each dancer's individual level, experienced or brand new, while building the skills necessary for more expressive or challenging movements, with each class attended.

Naturally aerobic and energizing African movements are broken down and moved across the floor, both right and left sides, for initial exercise and pure joy of natural movement. Totally accessible ballet/modern/jazz lines, shapes & movements that flow, utilize core strength and develope inherent grace, are then woven throughout, embellishing and accenting the overall expression of the choreography and of the dancers present.

Class begins and ends with stretching and strengthening exercises and important technique designed for the whole dancer. Each class is its own full lesson, so dancers have the freedom to drop-in, building their abilities and comfort levels based entirely on their own time and inspiration!

Pop in for just one class, or follow a developing progression of exuberantly graceful weekly choreographies that begin slowly, and evolve in complexity and speed over the week!

LIVE DRUMMING by local jazz drumming phenom, Jefferson Voorhees!

ATTIRE: Wear anything that you can move and stretch in, and feel joyful, beautiful, handsome and free in - we tend to wear leggings or dance shorts with a dress or skirt & shirt on top.  We dance barefoot, but ballet shoes, jazz shoes, and even dance sneakers are welcome if needed or desired!

Ballet-Afrique is the joyful expression and continued exploration and development, of Romy Keegan's personal dance and movement vocabulary.  It is inspired by a life time of ballet training and over 25 years of West African dance.  It was first introduced to her closest students in the autumn of 2012, and continues to blossom and grow through these on-going, supportive, joyful, community dance classes.

Contemporary Dance

For more information on Classes: Email Instructor   518-409-0551

Contemporary dance is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of several dance genres including ballet, modern and jazz. Joy of movement and unique and diverse expression is what is emphasized and encouraged in this class. This class starts with a set warmup which is danced to contemporary music and focuses on strengthening, stretching and developing greater dance technique. Each week the warmup is the same allowing the dancers an opportunity to become more comfortable with each class. Eventually the warmup becomes part of the dance, flowing from one part to the next with fluidity and purpose. After this, the class will shift to movement progressions across the floor. The core technique of dance will be the starting point with options for advanced progressions as each dancer is ready. The class ends with a center dance combination. This is the time to let the music drive the movement and self-expression within parameters of set choreography. The class will be infused with my knowledge of anatomy, orthopedics and the study of movement so that I may help others learn about proper alignment, technique and muscle activation. Modifications can also be made to suit specific movement limitations or pain.

Cross Step Waltz for Beginners

Teacher(s): Gary Diggs ~ See Schedule for times and prices

For more information on Classes: Email Instructor   293-5343

Cross step waltz was popular in the 1930s in Boston and New England and in Paris.  In 1995 noted Stanford University dance teacher and historian Richard Powers resurrected the cross step waltz recognizing its potential as a recreational dance for his students at Stanford and elsewhere.  (for more on cross step waltz history and to see a demo of some basic figures go to http://socialdance.stanford.edu/syllabi/cross-step_waltz.htm)   It draws on Argentine tango, waltz, and swing, to create unique step combinations and opportunities for improvisation.

"I continue to believe in cross-step waltz; I think it is unique and special. It combines the freedom, openness, spontaneity and passion of tango, with the swoops and swirls, the pivots, and the triple meter of waltz, with the complexity, the underarm turns, and athleticism of swing. And it combines all this cleverly, elegantly and with good taste making the whole greater than just the sum of its parts. It's certainly not the easiest dance to master, but potentially the most satisfying in my opinion "  - Gary Diggs

What is it about a Social!?  The essence of a Social is for the dance community to get together and dance.
Socials offer a relaxed night of dancing.  Socials continue to draw dance enthusiasts who get lost in their salsa “addiction” by dancing and enjoying the music.  Socials offer something for every level of dancer at any age.  Bands and DJs have more freedom to play sets which appeal to the dance-centric crowd. It's about the music. It's about the dance.

If you want to have an alternative to the club, are underage, or simply want to get in some good dancing - check out a Social, you might be surprised at how much fun you have.

PLEASE NOTE: There will be NO "SOS" - SALSA ON SUNDAY, 6/5, 7/10, 7/24 & 8/7.  Go to the NHCC instead for special salsa events there, facilitated by DJ, Pancho!  Here is a link to these special events:

SHIFT / DANCE - Contemporary Dance Collective

Teacher(s): Co-Directors and Independent Choreographers: Kelsey Paschich, Lisa Nevada, Jacqueline M. García ~ See Schedule for times and prices

For more information on Classes: Email Instructor

Maple Street Dance Space is honored to provide on-going rehearsal space to some of Albuquerque's most talented, productive and inspired choreographers and dancers, working both independently and collectively, through and as SHIFT / DANCE!

SHIFT | DANCE is spearheaded by Co-Founders and Directors, Jacqueline García, lisa nevada, and Kelsey Paschich. We are each resident choreographers within the framework of SHIFT. We do not necessarily create in the traditional way one might expect of a "dance collective." While we each present work through SHIFT, we also actively work as professionals through a range of independent projects and companies. This in/ter/dependence among and between our projects is a very important part of our identity and defines how we work.

We founded SHIFT in August 2015 as a vehicle to elevate and generate awareness for the range of contemporary dance forms within the Albuquerque community and as a platform to present and produce cutting-edge dance works from a range of emerging to mid-career artists. Sometimes this includes our own work, but often it means providing a platform to present both local and touring professional dance artists.

Together we have a BIG vision for dance in ABQ! To create momentum toward this shared reality we boldly venture to bring our individual talents together for the purpose of promoting a vibrant and diverse professional dance platform, through the collaborative efforts of an engaged community.

SHIFT | DANCE is...

  1. presenting platform for contemporary dance spearheaded by 3 local independent dance artists

  2. movement to elevate and generate awareness for the range of contemporary dance forms in ABQ

  3. choreographic incubator for the resident choreographers of the company to experiment and foster risk-taking in exploratory performance research.

Hello! I'd like to tell you a bit about how Zumba has brought me back from disabling pain, and about my class: My personal mission as a Zumba instructor, is to find women who need to heal through dance.  After getting rear ended in a car accident 8 years ago, and then developing the chronic pain that was due to fibromyalgia, I went through 8 years of barely tolerable suffering. It was Zumba that brought me back, and keeps me going every day. My burning desire is to find other people who are afraid to exercise due to pain, who suffer and feel trapped by it, the way I was. IF YOU ARE ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE, OR YOU KNOW ONE, I BEG you to forward this information to them. What they might not know is that unlike other forms of exercise that can re-injure one or two painful hot spots, dance is the only form of exercise where you use all of your body and therefore over time will heal and strengthen, beginning with your core and out. It also is a joyous, creative form of fitness that will infuse you with pleasurable adrenaline that will in turn help your mood which lessens the pain.

Spread the word! My class is focused on : silly, elegant dance moves, raised arms, core work, and raising your heels,(as opposed to a lot of propulsion.) With these changes, you can still get your heart rate up, burn 600 calories, and tone, without hurting yourself. Or you can rev it up even more, or slow it down!! Movement is all I ask! Come muevelo, muevelo with me today!

In order to protect the longevity of our floors please bring a second clean soled pair of shoes to change into once you are inside the studio!

Tuesdays, 5:25-6:25, FRONT DOOR STUDIO, Wednesdays, 5:25-6:25, BACK DOOR STUDIO, & Sundays, 11am-12noon, FRONT DOOR Studio, $5 Drop-In
